Why we share and why it matters

May 26, 2015

"The things that we are doing are inherently human, but we are doing them in new ways, in a new space." Alfred Hermida, Author of the book Tell Everyone: Why we share and why it matters, says that as social creatures, social media speaks to us as a channel to communicate with one another... but it doesn't always make sense.

Do you think that if you're not on social media, you are unaffected by the medium? Think again, says Hermida, who aims to show how the sphere of social media influence affects all of us, whether we are active on those channels, or not.

"News and information is literally ambient; it's in the background," says Hermida. This omnipresence of information, he says, has drastically changed the way we consume the details about what is happening in the world around us.

Tell Everyone is about our urge to share information and be social, and how this is enhanced and extended by a new range of technologies. Alfred Hermida analyzes the way we frame and share news and information using social media.
